There is no doubt traffic using the Route 9-Nassau Commons Boulevard intersection near Lewes has increased with the opening of the new Redner’s Fresh Market.

Some relief could be on the way as plans to improve the intersection progress. Those improvements include a traffic signal, turn lanes and pedestrian crossings, according to Charles “C.R.” McLeod, Delaware Department of Transportation director of community relations.

“We have a letter of agreement with the developer of the Vineyards for them to design and construct improvements at the intersection,” he said. “The developer’s team is currently designing the intersection and roadway improvements and will be incorporating them before the next phase of their development construction. We don’t have a timeline for construction.”

Redner’s, which opened Nov. 17, is the first major commercial development in the Vineyards, which includes a mix of commercial and single-family homes, condominiums and apartments on an 82-acre parcel adjacent to Nassau Valley Vineyards. A new traffic signal on Route 9 at the entrance to the Vineyards was installed in late summer. The Vineyards, owned by Fernmoor Holdings of Jackson, N.J., is one of the largest communities in the Lewes area, with plans for nearly 950 residential units and up to 400,000 square feet of commercial and office space.

The county’s Social Security office relocated from Georgetown to the retail area of the community in 2013.
