Simple Things In Life exhibit to open at Gallery One Sept. 2

August 26, 2020

Gallery One in Ocean View announced its Simple Things in Life exhibit will be open to the public from Wednesday, Sept. 2 to Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The exhibit’s theme celebrates small things in life that seem simple, and yet may more accurately be described as essential. Some of those little things people take for granted and often go unobserved are the sorts of things that artists notice and elevate for viewers to notice.

Artist Joyce Condry’s “Washed Ashore” in acrylic depicts two simple shells on the beach in their natural setting, conveying memories of summer, the sea and beachcombing. With its simplicity in composition and image, the painting almost makes people feel the sand between their toes and smell the salt air.

Lesley McCaskill’s acrylic painting, “Swimmers,” illustrates the nurturing simplicity of the view from one’s own backyard.

Laura Hickman’s pastel painting, “Rainy Day Reading,” captures the coziness of a simple day spent reading on the couch beside a furry best friend. Painted in vibrant colors with an almost graphic feel, the simplicity of the theme sparkles with the complexity of the composition.

Dale Sheldon’s acrylic “Tangier Reflections” is a peaceful ode to a vanishing locale and a simpler way of life, as well as a lovely vision of reflected color and shore architecture.

Mary Bode Byrd’s acrylic “Umbrellas” treats the viewer to a vibrant display of summertime color. One of the simple joys of a trip to the beach is that moment when one first arrives and is struck by the cacophony of color along the seaside.

Always staffed by an artist, Gallery One is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day at 32 Atlantic Ave., Route 26, in Ocean View. Face masks and social distancing are required. To ensure the safety of all, the number of visitors at any one time may be limited.
