Six Cape students rock the rotunda at signing ceremony

The rotunda at Cape Henlopen High School was rocking with family and friends Feb. 24, as six athletes signed letters of intent to pursue their passion and love for a specific sport. 

Marlee Geppert, a field hockey goalie, will attend Queens University in Charlotte, N.C. The Royals are a young program, having begun the sport at the Division II level in 2016. Last year, the Royals were 13-7 competing in the South Atlantic Conference. They are coached by Brandi Kist, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Cape’s Carey Karl, now a college senior majoring in nursing, started 55 games for the Royals.

Cameron Smith, Delaware’s Division I Player of the Year, will play field hockey for the Golden Rams of West Chester University. West Chester, the 2019 Division II national champion, has been a consistent force in field hockey over the last 70 years. Cape’s Sydney Ostroski was a senior defender for the 2019 Golden Rams. Amy Cohen has been the head coach at West Chester the last nine years.

DJ Johnson is heading to the University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif., in the Greater Los Angeles area. La Verne is a Division III school competing in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Leopards have been playing football for the last 83 years and went undefeated in 2015. The are coached by Christopher Krich. 

Ryleigh Elliott is going to Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., where she will play softball. The Yellowjackets were 30-17 last season and play in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The team advanced to the NCAA Division II final four in Tyler, Texas, losing to Emory and Wesleyan. The Yellowjackets are coached by Kevin Proffitt, now in his 18th season. 

Carlin Quinn will attend Millersville University in Pennsylvania to play softball. The Marauders were 20-31 last season and play in the tough Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Jen Probst has been the head coach since 2016, having guided the Marauders to the postseason twice. 

Kaniah James will play softball for the Delaware Tech Roadrunners, a Division II member of the National Junior College Athletic Association. The team is led by head coach Guy Wilkins and assisted by Eric Swanson. Wilkins has been the head coach at Del Tech since 2016, having previously coached in the Sussex Central system.
