The sixth annual Bump, Set, Light Volleyball Tournament took place July 26 at Hyatt Place in Dewey Beach.
Hosted by SL24: UnLocke the Light Foundation, the tournament brings together hundreds of players, volunteers, sponsors and community members to raise awareness for youth mental health while fundraising to support the opening of Sean's House Sussex this fall.
The Bump, Set, Light Volleyball Tournament was established in memory of Sean Locke, a 2012 Saint Mark’s High School graduate, a 2016 University of Delaware graduate and a former Division I basketball player who lost his battle with depression in July 2018.
The funds raised benefit the SL24: UnLocke the Light Foundation, created in his honor to help educate, assist and support those navigating mental health challenges.
"We’ve always called this the local light because the brightest part of Sussex County has never been just its beaches; it’s always been its people," said Kat Locke, Sean's mother.
"To have a single-day beach volleyball tournament raise $300,000 is absurd in the best way," said Tyler Coupe, Cape Henlopen High School boys' and girls' volleyball coach, and the new manager of Sean's House Sussex. "Today was another brilliant event displaying the continued support of our community."
The amateur event comprised 20 teams varying from high school to college, or local friends who just want to help support. The winning amateur team then qualified for the pro division, becoming the 16th team in the bracket.
"To have a team of Logan Shuttleworth and Brady Lamb win and advance was the ultimate cool feeling for me personally," said Coupe. "Our pro division has really taken off with its attraction of talent. My team alone had players from San Diego, [Los Angeles] and South Carolina, with other teams coming in from Florida, Virginia Beach and New York.
"We couldn’t have asked for a better weather day," Coupe added. "And we can’t wait to share the Sean’s House Sussex message and mission with everyone in our county."
The amateur winner was Team Triumph, while the pro winning team was Jersey Joes.
