SoDel Cares donates $4,000 to Surfers Healing

September 16, 2018

SoDel Cares, the philanthropic arm of SoDel Concepts hospitality group, recently donated $4,000 to Surfers Healing, which holds volunteer-staffed surf camps for more than 4,500 children with autism.

Founded in 1969 in Southern California, the organization coordinates Surfers Healing Day in Ocean City, Md., each year. The 2018 event was held Aug. 15. Kris Medford, an avid surfer and director of operations for SoDel Concepts, participates in the event.

“Kris brought Surfers Healing to our attention, and we’ve offered our support ever since,” said Scott Kammerer, president of SoDel Concepts, which owns 10 restaurants along the Delaware coast, including NorthEast Seafood Kitchen in Ocean View and Papa Grande's Coastal Taquería in Fenwick Island.

“The mission of Surfers Healing aligns closely with our own, which is to help people – particularly youth – in our communities,” he said. “Incorporating the ocean, which is so much a part of our area, makes this organization all the more special to us.”

Many children with autism struggle with sensory overload, and the ocean’s buoyancy and rhythm can soothe them.

Kelly Loeser and Dale Loeser, owners of Quiet Storm in Rehoboth Beach, accepted the check on behalf of Surfers Healing. The company is involved with the charity.

SoDel Concepts also helps children and adults with autism in other ways. In 2017, Autism Delaware selected SoDel Concepts as the recipient of the Noelle Perry Smith Employer of the Year Award.
