SoDel goes so well as runners are happy to show up in person

Smiley and Wright win races
November 11, 2020

The SoDel Cares 5K  between Blue Coast Seafood Grill and Thompson Island Brewery Nov. 7 attracted a happy crowd that was there in person. They could reach and fish bump or fist bump people they haven’t recognized since March.

Dylan Smiley of Rehoboth led the race post to paddock in a sizzling time of 15:28. The top 21 runners in the field of 213 ran below seven minutes per mile for the distance. And there were a bunch of one-mile walkers just there for the cause of conviviality and to snag a free breakfast in a bag.

The top 5 leaderboard for men following Smiley were: Colten Morris in 16:44, Joey Andrisani in 18:02, Brian Lovett in 18:11 and Andy Gorlich in 18:39.

Bethany Killmon Wright was the overall women’s winner in 19:56. She was followed by Cindy Conant in 20:09, Michele Karsnitz in 20:54, Laura Berger in 21:49 and Karen Tanner in 22:15.

Paul “Skip” Kiefer, 80, the relentless landscaper from Lancaster, continued to dominate the 80-and-over age group by virtue of being the only one in his age group. However, Paul’s time of 44:55 brought him home before 46 other finishers.

Matt Sparacino, 43, the Harrington Harrier, ran 18:48, while his son Matteo, 8, clocked a time of 34:07.

Rick Poppleton and Mike Wardian ran with dog Snapper in a time of 27:42.
