Sponge ‘90s rockers to play at Rusty Rudder April 26

April 24, 2019

Detroit modern rockers Sponge will play at the Rusty Rudder Friday, April 26. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Hailing from Detroit, Sponge gained widespread notoriety with its 1994 debut album "Rotting Piñata.” Hits like "Plowed"and "Molly (16 Candles)" fueled massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and were in heavy rotation on MTV in the late ‘90s. The disc pushed Sponge into the international spotlight, remaining on the Billboard 200 Chart for 40 weeks.

The single “Plowed” was featured in the movies “Empire Records” (1995) and “Chasing Mavericks” (2012). Radio host Howard Stern cites Sponge as one of his all-time favorite acts, and he recently had the band perform live on his Sirius XM show.

Now, 25 years after its release, Sponge is celebrating “Rotting Piñata” with a national tour, including a stop at the Rusty Rudder. Sponge will be performing tracks from “Rotting Piñata” and hits including “Have You Seen Mary,” and the title track from their critically lauded sophomore CD “Wax Ecstatic,” plus songs from the band’s most recent release, “The Beer Sessions.”

Ages 21 and over are welcome to attend. Tickets are $20. For more information, go to www.spongetheband.com and www.rustyrudderdewey.com.
