Spread joy by signing up for Lewes lights

November 19, 2020

Let’s face it. We have not had the jolliest 2020. We need to celebrate this holiday season, but find safe ways to create joy, lift spirits, build goodwill, help neighbors and support our local businesses. With those goals in mind, Christian Mullins and I started a new holiday event for Lewes called Lewes Lights: Making Spirits Bright, and this grassroots campaign is simple. We are asking neighbors, both homeowners and businesses, to decorate and light up their Lewes homes from Dec. 4 to Dec. 31, dusk to 9 p.m., and register your address, either as a home or business, on our website by Black Friday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. We will release a map of the registered addresses on our website Dec. 1 and spectators can tour at their own pace, safely from their cars, following all state and local COVID-19 mandates. Only street addresses will be listed, without homeowner names, for those who desire privacy. We also hope that spectators will patronize our local businesses while they are in town viewing the lights. So, safely visit Lewes, support a community that has been hit hard this year, and share in the joy that is Christmas.

Homes in the City of Lewes are eligible to compete in five judged categories, ranging from simple and traditional Colonial to “Clark Griswold” lighting craziness, so anyone and everyone should feel welcome to register, whether you just decorate your front door and hang a few lights on the porch or you cover your home in lights and have festive figures in your yard! There is also a Fun & Frosty kids’ choice award, and an award for the jolliest street. However, you do not need compete to register your home on this tour of lights. At the end of registering, homeowners in the City of Lewes will have an option to participate in the contest or opt out and just have their house listed on the map. Residents and businesses in the 19958 Lewes ZIP code are also asked to decorate, register, and be listed on our interactive map. Due to the immense size of Greater Lewes, we just don’t feel that we can manage judging, monitoring, and buying home signs for such a large area, as we are volunteers and not soliciting donations. We do hope that neighborhoods outside the City of Lewes register their homes and encourage neighbors to do the same. It would be wonderful to feature decorated neighborhoods on our Facebook and Instagram pages!

So, whether you are in the City of Lewes, or outside of town, competing for awards, or just decorating to celebrate the season, we are asking you to go to and register.  Our goal is a map covered in pinpoints with lights shining brightly throughout Lewes. No matter how you are entered, you will bring joy to spectators driving the tour, to neighbors who may be elderly or shut-in, and to children who are having a very different Christmas this year.
