St. Elizabeth team ends Cape’s season

Vikings won Henlopen Championship and reached many goals
March 5, 2019

The Cape girls just couldn’t get their motors revved up March 4, as they were run over by top-seeded St. Elizabeth 57-33 in the quarterfinals of the DIAA State Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Dover High.

St. Elizabeth’s Ber’Nyah Ward-Mayo scored 21 points and also dished off nine assists. Naia Pulliam added 18 points for the St. E Vikings.

Cape pulled to 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, but the shooting of Ward-Mayo and the St. E defense on Cape center Abbey Hearn kept the Vikings from making any big runs. Hearn had 25 points in their first meeting.

Cape was led by Mehkia Applewhite with 13 points and four rebounds. Morgan Mahoney finished with eight points.

Hearn, fighting off a fever, scored seven points and pulled down seven rebounds. Junior Carlin Quinn was credited with six rebounds and won numerous loose-ball diving battles.

“I told the girls not to remember the last 32 minutes,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “We had a great season and exceeded other people’s expectations of us. I set program goals when I heard I got the job. The on-court goals, we reached 11 of the 13 we set this season. We didn’t make the final four or win the state championship, but those are the next two goals we have on the list. They shot the lights out tonight. We didn’t compete like I thought we could. Ber’Nyah [Ward-Mayo] just dominated the game. You’ve got to handle business regardless of the score. I told them to forget about the score, you just have to play in the moment. Just compete. You can see we got better game after game after game. But so did St. E.”

Cape finishes the season at 19-4 with a Henlopen Conference Championship.

The semifinal round will be played Wednesday, March 6, at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark. Conrad will play Sanford at 6:30 p.m., while St. E faces Caravel at 8 p.m.
