Starboard, Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill granted temporary expansions

Dewey commissioners approve request for annual events
February 27, 2020

Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously Feb. 8 to allow two businesses to temporarily expand premises for special events.

Starboard owner Steve Montgomery applied to temporarily expand restaurant premises for opening weekend Friday-Sunday, March 13-15; Running of the Bull Saturday, June 27; and Dewey Goes Pink Saturday, Oct. 3.

Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill owner Brian Carlisle applied for a temporary expansion for the Saturday, April 25 Flight of the Phoenix post-race event.

Neither business owner was able to attend the public hearing; Town Manager Scott Koenig said the town building inspector and police chief approved all applications when he presented the requests to commissioners.

Koenig said Montgomery provides security using a combination of contracted state police officers, his own personnel and Dewey Beach police officers. Montgomery reimburses the town for the cost of Dewey police, Koenig said.

This is the second year Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill will host the Flight of the Phoenix post-race event, Koenig said. The expansion will consist of a small tent on a side-street parking lot, Koenig said, and Gary’s will provide security and portable restrooms.

One resident spoke in favor of The Starboard’s extensions; no one spoke against any application.
