Starboard to host Broomstick Derby, Bloody Mary contest May 4-5

April 27, 2019

The Starboard Restaurant in Dewey Beach is the place to party Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, with two great events happening back-to-back. “We’ve got a stellar weekend planned for our Starboard customers,” said owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery. “Everyone can come out, get silly, and enjoy a weekend of friendly competition.”

Participants at the 3rd Annual Broomstick Derby will don their best Derby attire and mount a broomstick horse to see who comes in with the photo finish. The pre-party will begin at 4 p.m., but early arrivals and signups are encouraged. In addition to cash prizes up for grabs, the Starboard will be giving away gift cards to various local businesses.

The Starboard will also host a viewing of the main event which inspired this jovial spin-off: The Kentucky Derby. Attendees can watch the big race at 6 p.m. on all 46 high-definition televisions while they sip on mint juleps with pinkies in the air. Kristen and The Noise will keep the party going into the night, beginning at 10 p.m.

The next day, those who may need some hair of the dog can get back to the Starboard for the 6th Annual Tito’s Bloody Mary Contest! One thing the Starboard is surely famous for is its bloody marys! The Starboard staff will try to defend their home turf in a contest filled to the brim with tomato juice and spirit.

Local restaurants will go head-to-head in the contest starting at 3 p.m., while a panel of judges sips a variety of masterly crafted bloody Marys ranging from over-the-top to downright insane. Guests can get in on the action to see who reigns victorious, bringing home the title and all the bragging rights.

Both events are completely free and filled with all the quirky character people have come to expect from the Starboard and its dedicated staff. Parking in Dewey is still free that weekend, before the heat of the summer season.
