Through its 14th annual black tag auction, the Starboard restaurant in Dewey Beach raised $79,257 for the B+ Foundation.

The charity was founded by Joe McDonough to honor his late son, Andrew, who sadly lost his battle with childhood leukemia. McDonough notes that many people lose their jobs when their children become ill with cancer, because their care becomes a full-time job. So the money raised by The Starboard through the annual fundraiser provides direct financial relief to these families in need. 

“For years now, we have been so fortunate to work with Joe and B+ to raise money for the brave families fighting childhood cancer," said Keith “Toastie” Kirk, chief caretaker at the Starboard.

Over the past 14 auctions, an aggregate total of $700,000 has been raised to further research for childhood cancer to help affected families and their children fight with as little stress as possible.

“People look forward to this fundraiser every year because of the black tags and VIP access to The Starboard, but also because they know the impact it has," said Steve "Monty" Montgomery, owner of the Starboard. "This is what it’s all about, taking care of one another and having a great time while doing it.” 

McDonough said, “Thanks to Monty, Toastie and everyone at The Starboard. Special thanks to our organizer, Aaron Dunphy, for making all of the magic happen, and to [Delaware Department of Transportation] for donating a legitimate black tag license plate. Because of this collective effort, 60 local families of kids with cancer will have their financial burden lessened while their precious child fights their life-or-death battle. This money will cover critical living expenses like rent, utilities and car repairs, so they can get to their appointments and so much more. Beyond helping financially, we’re giving these families hope!”
