Due to temperatures hitting above 90 degrees for multiple days in a row this week, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services will activate its cooling centers for those who need relief from the heat.

Centers will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday to Friday, July 15 to 17.

Sussex County locations run by DHSS are at Adams State Service Center, 546 Bedford St., Georgetown, 302-515-3004; Laurel State Service Center, 31039 N. Poplar St., Laurel, 302-875-8402; and Shipley State Service Center, 350 Virginia Ave., Seaford, 302-628-7000.

These spaces offer a safe, air-conditioned environment where anyone can cool down and stay hydrated.

Cooling station locations have also been announced by Sussex County officials, with various hours July 15 to 17. Sussex County reminds the public that select county facilities, as well as partner locations at 11 independent community libraries, are available as cooling stations in the summer during their regular business hours, offering the public a respite from the heat and humidity.

The County Administration Building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown, is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Milton Library, 121 Union St., Milton, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, July 15 and 16; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, July 17; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 18.

South Coastal Library, 43 Kent Ave., Bethany Beach, is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday.

Greenwood Library, 100 Mill St., Greenwood, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday.

Paramedics from Sussex County EMS will make routine stops at the county facilities, as time permits, to answer any heat-related questions and/or concerns. Free, individual servings of bottled water will be available during this period to help the public cool off. Anyone visiting a relief station should be sure to bring any needed medications and/or specialty items with them.

A heat advisory is in effect for Sussex County until 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 15, as forecasters predict temperatures to soar toward 100 degrees, with humidity making it feel like nearly 110 degrees at times. Temperatures could return to more seasonable values in the low 90s with the arrival of scattered showers and thunderstorms by the weekend.
