STEMporium to offer Odyssey of the Mind practice Jan. 19

January 16, 2020

The Great STEMporium will hold a Spectacular Spontaneous Festival on Sunday, Jan. 19, for teams that are preparing for Odyssey of the Mind competitions.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international competition that challenges kids from kindergarten through college to solve problems in creative, original ways. While the program revolves around creative problem-solving, it also focuses on teamwork, learning, diversity of thought, civility, friendships and fun. Part of the competition requires teams to flex their skills with “spontaneous” challenges, which involve a mix of verbal problems and hands-on problems.

STEMporium co-founder and former Odyssey of the Mind judge Cari Miller said The Great STEMporium’s Spectacular Spontaneous Festival will allow teams to practice four verbal problems and two hands-on problems.

“In addition, teams and coaches from different schools will be able to interact and encourage each other,” she said. “We’re always blown away by how creative the kids can be. It’s an honor to be able to do this for our local teams.”

Team sign-up is required to participate in the festival. There is a fee of $5 per student. Start times are available every 30 minutes beginning at 1 p.m. with the last start time at 3 p.m. Teams should plan to spend about an hour and a half working on challenges. Teams that can’t make it for this event are always welcome to come in during normal business hours to practice the challenges on their own time, Miller said.
