Strengthening Families Program wrapped up at Milton Elementary

January 15, 2019

Milton Elementary School recently wrapped up another successful parenting skills program. In the fall session, six parents and eight children participated in the Strengthening Families Program. During seven weekly sessions, families take part in an evidenced-based parenting curriculum. The program is currently in its 10th and final year, and has seen 75 Milton families participate.

SFP is funded through a federal 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant and is administered by the Delaware Department of Education. A unique collaboration between Milton Elementary and Children & Families First, the program is an extension of its after-school program. It is the only partnership of its kind in Kent and Sussex counties.

The spring session will be the final program offered as the 10-year funding ends. The program provides dinner, transportation and child care to promote parent attendance. The three components are parenting skills, children’s skills and family skills. Parents learn fundamental principles of effective behavior management, communication skills and stress reduction techniques. Children learn to understand their emotions and develop problem-solving skills.

All interested parents are encouraged to participate with their children. For more information, contact Gloria Ho, Milton Elementary social worker, at 302-684-2516.
