Locals and early-season visitors got a little taste of summer this week, as temperatures reached the high 90s most days.
Mother Nature may have other plans in store for Memorial Day weekend, but that doesn't mean it will be any less crowded in the Cape Region from now through the end of August.
AAA estimates more than 130,000 Delawareans will be traveling 50 or more miles this weekend, a 0.5% increase over last year. Despite gas prices about $1.50 per gallon higher this year, AAA estimates nearly 90% of travelers will be driving.
If the rainy forecast holds, the Cape Region's roads, particularly Route 1, will be very busy this weekend. Rain typically means congested roads, long lines at restaurants and packed parking lots at shopping centers. Our best advice is to be patient.
That same mindset applies to the hospitality industry – the backbone of our local economy. Expect crowds, longer wait times and perhaps a few service hiccups. It’s still early in the season, with many college students not yet home, and local high schoolers finishing up sports and school events. Many businesses are short-staffed. Be kind to the workers doing their best, whether they’re at the host stand, serving tables or cooking.
Parking rules are also in full effect. Take a moment to read the signs. If you’re using ParkMobile, double-check that you’ve entered the correct license plate and vehicle information. Parking enforcement is out and doing its job; it’s your responsibility to understand and follow the rules.
Most importantly, let’s not lose sight of the meaning of Memorial Day. This weekend is a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Without their courage, our freedoms wouldn’t exist.
Memorial Day observances will take place around the area Sunday and Monday, May 24 and 25. One highlight is the parade hosted by American Legion Post 17 in Lewes at 11 a.m., Monday, featuring local veterans and dignitaries. A ceremony follows at 12 p.m. Go to capegazette.com/calendar and check the print edition for a full listing of local ceremonies.
Let’s all help kick off the summer season this weekend by being safe and respectful, while also honoring the true meaning of Memorial Day.
