The Lewes Public Library's SummerScape outdoor performing arts series will continue as the Nanticoke Indian Dance Troupe takes the stage at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 8, in the library pavilion at 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.

Performing traditional Native American dances, troupe members will explain the art form's cultural significance, along with the importance of oral tradition. 

The troupe consists of Native American dancers of all ages who proudly demonstrate their individual dance styles. Storytelling is woven throughout the presentation, helping the audience understand how dance carries memory, identity and tradition. 

SummerScape events continue weekly on Wednesdays in July and August, showcasing a wide range of music, dance and theater experiences.

Delaware Shakespeare will perform July 15, presenting “Embers of Freedom: Independence Through the Eyes of Many.” The innovative production weaves a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence together with writings from underrepresented voices including Frederick Douglass, Indigenous poets and expressions of queer joy.

Two energetic musical performances will close out the month. Jake’s Americana Bluegrass Band will entertain the crowd July 22, celebrating a rich musical tradition that has been an integral part of American culture since its arrival in the 1600s.

The performer for July 29, Philadelphia’s Mister Boom Boom, will deliver an immersive, hands-on drum circle experience for children, families, and music lovers of all ages, celebrating the power and spirit of African drumming.

All events are free to attend, and registration is not required. The pavilion and surrounding lawn will be open the community to walk up with lawn chairs, or attendees may borrow a folding chair from the library. Picnics and blankets are also welcome. In the event of rain, the performance will move inside the library.
