Sun Otter Tours offers science-based outings in Rehoboth Beach

Hands-on learning adventures for the naturally curious
July 8, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce welcomed Sun Otter Tours to the resort community with a ribbon cutting June 27.

Sun Otter Tours LLC, owned by Jody and Steve Dengler of Lewes, opened for business in Rehoboth Beach June 22. The science-based tour company offers guided tours suited for local residents and visitors alike. Sun Otter Tours combines salt air and science to provide a fresh approach to tours in coastal Delaware.

"We've had an overwhelming response to the tours," said Steve Dengler, co-owner of Sun Otter Tours. "Hotels and rental agents are excited to offer guests more choices, and visitors and residents are thrilled to get a peek at the science behind Delaware's beach life."

According to the recent 2016 Southern Delaware Tourism Survey Report, a frequent top request from area visitors is more tours. Sun Otter Tours accommodates those requests, offering downtown Rehoboth Beach pickup service in a brightly wrapped, air-conditioned bus adorned with pictures of land and sea creatures.

Tours range from the extensive Marine Ecology Tour, including hands-on activities with Sea Grant Delaware at the University of Delaware, to the lighter Alchemy of Alcohol Tour, featuring the science of beer-making and distilling with visits - and tastings - at local breweries, distilleries and the new local meadery. For more family-friendly activities, Sun Otter Tours offers Night Moves, featuring a pontoon boat ride into the mysterious bald cypress swamp at nightfall, and Beach Science, highlighting marine animals and kid-friendly science experiments on the beach. Upscale boxed lunches are included on several of the tours.

Jody Dengler eagerly talks about the unique company name: "So many people don't realize that we have otters in Sussex County. Otters are instinctively curious, and they are experts at play. They use it for socialization and to learn and practice new skills." Jody is a certified tour guide who previously handled tours for a local university. "We approach our tours with that same sense of play; our motto is Indulge Your Natural Curiosity. Guests meet new people and learn about coastal science while having fun. It's a different and interesting way to enjoy the beach that most people never get to experience on their own."
