Surf Bagel to celebrate National Coffee Day Sept. 29

Contest winner to receive free cup of java daily through 2020
September 23, 2020

National Coffee Day, the official day to celebrate America’s favorite morning beverage, has steadily gained popularity since its 2005 inception.

Surf Bagel’s two locations in Lewes and Rehoboth are brewing up a day of buzz-worthy happenings from 6:30 a.m., to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29. To celebrate, Surf Bagel will introduce, for a limited time, a coffee-infused bagel featuring Swell Joe Coffee’s Stoked roast. Surf Bagel will also officially launch Swell Joe Coffee’s Pumpin’ pumpkin spice blend by the cup and bag.

“We’re more excited than usual for National Coffee Day 2020, because this year, in particular, simple gestures like free coffee and giveaways can really lift people up – and why not use this occasion to bring a smile or two,” said Dave Vitella, Surf Bagel founder and co-owner.

Additional Sept. 29 offerings include: Free medium-sized coffee to every customer; free Pumpin’ pumpkin spice coffee lip balm made by Rehoboth Beach Balm to the first 50 customers at each shop; $2 off every 12 oz. bag of Swell Joe Coffee, ground or whole bean; $5 off every Swell Joe brewed-box-to-go coffee serving 10; and three free punches on each customer’s Surf Bagel Hang Ten Coffee Club card toward a future cup of coffee purchase.

Through a social media contest, one winner will receive a free cup of coffee at Surf Bagel every day through 2020. For details, follow @surfbagel on Facebook or Instagram.

Vitella said, “We feel fortunate to serve this awesome beach community for over 17 years, and we welcome every opportunity, big or small, to show our gratitude.” In light of state-regulated safety measures that include wearing masks in public, he said, “We truly believe that we have the best customers, and we love seeing their familiar smiles every day even from behind the masks.”

Dave and Sharon Vitella teamed up with Drew and Karen Johnson in spring 2014 to launch Swell Joe Coffee Roastery. Surf Bagel Manager Wendy DiGuglielmo said, “What a difference to have coffee that is ground, brewed and in our customers’ cups within days of the roasting process. We’re excited to offer what we consider to be the best-tasting, freshest coffee in coastal Delaware, and the fact that it’s roasted in Lewes seems to resonate with our customers.”

Karen Johnson, who handles branding/marketing for Swell Joe Coffee, said, “We know that the first cup of coffee in the morning is a ritual favored by so many people.” Johnson said a study by the National Coffee Association indicates that nearly 150 million Americans enjoy coffee every day. “We’re thrilled that Surf Bagel was the first spot to serve Swell Joe Coffee six years ago. And we’re delighted to see how locally roasted, small-batch coffee is embraced here in the Cape Region.”

A family-owned and -operated, iconic beach eatery with locations in Lewes and Rehoboth, Surf Bagel offers New York-style bagels made from scratch daily, plus an extensive breakfast and lunch menu featuring the freshest and finest ingredients – and it is proud to serve locally roasted Swell Joe Coffee.
