Surf Sail Sea photo exhibit to open June 1 at The Pines

May 29, 2019

A new exhibition by Sean Kelley and Brian White will open Saturday, June 1, at two Rehoboth Beach locations, The Pines restaurant and Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty office. The exhibit, Surf Sail Sea, features more than 42 large-format photographic pieces by Kelley and White.

The photographs blend the arts of surfing and sailing through the natural forces that power both sports. They combine action and serene imagery alike to definitively capture the energy of both sports and the soul-soothing environments they share. Their works are presented on a variety of materials including photographic paper, canvas, high-gloss metal, and acrylic glass.

The two photographers have arranged their works in the modern coastal offices of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s at 49 Baltimore Ave., and the upscale second-floor lounge of The Pines at 56 Baltimore Ave.

“When we opened our new downtown location last year, we knew we wanted the art on the walls to reflect the contemporary beach vibe of both Baltimore Avenue and our interiors,” said Kathleen Schell, marketing director at OASIR. “Brian’s sailing images displayed on the walls have been an extraordinary and noteworthy addition, significantly transforming the space.”

Kelley is a photographer and artist based in Fairfax, Va. Growing up 10 minutes from the North Shore in Oahu, Kelley learned to surf at a young age. After graduation from George Mason University in 1987, he lifeguarded in Bethany Beach and fell in love with the Delaware coastal area. He is well known for his large-format, black-and-white images of local beaches. To this day, Kelley says that the sea, surfing, and beach culture remain the single greatest influences in his photographic work. He spends his weekends in the warm months working in his gallery in Penny Lane Mall in Rehoboth Beach.

White is a photographer and artist based in Lewes. Specializing in nautical subject matter, he is best known for his use of booms to create unique photographic presentations with a rustic modern theme. White regularly photographs sailboat racing regattas in the Chesapeake Bay region and crews in local races throughout the summer season. He says he draws his greatest inspiration from the water, wind, sailors and scenery that surround the sport of sailing.

The Surf Sail Sea photography exhibition will be open to the public through Tuesday, June 16. It is guaranteed to delight visitors with its subject matter, materials and aesthetic impact.
