Sussex County is weeks away from getting its fourth medical marijuana dispensary – this one in Seaford.

It’s an area of the county that’s drastically underserved, said Greg Huggler, general manager of Fresh Delaware. Patients won’t have to drive all the way to the beach or Georgetown anymore, he said.

This is the second dispensary for Fresh Delaware, which is a subsidiary of Compassionate Care Research Institute. The first Fresh Delaware opened on Ogletown Road in Newark almost four years ago – March 2019. When Fresh Delaware’s latest store opens, the state will have 11 dispensaries. A 12th is expected to open in Wilmington sometime in 2023.

Huggler said while the specific opening date hasn’t been set, the state has completed its final inspection, coolers have been delivered, staff has been hired and is being trained, and the iPads in-person customers use will be delivered soon.

“Within two weeks, max,” said Huggler during an interview Jan. 26.

The space is 4,000 square feet and there will be 185 shelves of merchandise, said Huggler. It works on a cycle, but at any given time, patients can expect 15 to 20 strains of flower to be available, he said.

“The goal is to be a one-stop shop and make it as easy for the patients as possible,” said Huggler, who is a relative newcomer to Fresh Delaware, but has experience in the processing end of marijuana. “When I arrived, it was a bunch of boxes and dust, and I’ve been here every day since.”

To begin, the dispensary will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Huggler said it will take about a month to train another supervisor. When that’s completed, the store will open seven days a week, he said.
