Sussex Academy soccer holds off Cape 1-0

Vikings defeat Gunston 3-0
October 21, 2019

The Sussex Academy and Cape soccer rivalry heated up the chilly Oct. 17 night at Legends Stadium, where a lone goal by Adison Browne at at the 49-minute mark determined the Seahawks’ victory.

Each team took five shots in back-and-forth action. Cape keeper Alan Marin-Quiroz made four saves, while Seahawks cageminder Cole White stopped all five of the Vikings’ attempts. Cape held a 7-2 advantage in corners.

“It was disappointing to lose to Sussex Academy,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “This is officially a rivalry match. We are struggling to stay healthy, to score goals and to win the big matches. This season is definitely turning into a learning experience. Coach Rupar and I are trying to keep the boys focused, keep their heads up, and trying to make sure that they know that they are still playing for a postseason berth.”

The Vikings move to 5-4-2, while the Seahawks are 7-4-1.

“Our backs are against the wall,” said Kilby. “It will be interesting to see how they respond in the final four matches of the season. Coach Rupar and I are excited to see if we bring the energy, fight and soccer awareness to the table in our remaining matches. We truly believe our best soccer is yet to be played.”

The Vikings got back on the winning track Oct. 18, with a 3-0 non-conference victory over the Gunston School of Centreville, Md.

Sophomore Gary Hayes struck first at the 14-minute mark off a pass from Nathan Loucks. Ethan Shuttlewoth added a score at 38 minutes off an assist from Danio Somoza-Lima. Chris Gonzalez added an insurance goal at the 41-minute mark from Loucks.

The Vikings outshot the Herons 10-3. Forest Dotterer collected three saves in goal for the Vikings.

“It was nice to get back to our winning ways,” said Kilby. “The Gunston match gave me a chance to look at potential lineups for next season. We brought up three JV players and played a young lineup. We were pleased with what we saw.”

The Vikings will host Polytech Tuesday, Oct. 22, for Cape’s Senior Night.
