Sussex Consortium students hosted a reception March 13 at Cape High to celebrate the work they produced during an after-school arts program.

Student Anne Marie Perrotta said she created a clay animal comprising parts of a fish, dog and horse. She said she loved making prints by using cars and other objects to roll over shaving cream dyed with food coloring.

“It was pretty fun,” she said. “I want to do it again next year.”

Student Hudson Keller made an animal sculpture combining features of a parrot, spider and lizard.

“It was the worst combination of animals I could think of,” he smiled. “I like weird post-apocalyptic stuff.”

About 25 students participated in the eight-week artists residency program offered by VSA Delaware and partially funded by the Freeman Stage, said VSA Executive Director Jennifer Gunther.

“They’re building artistic skills while developing confidence and social skills,” she said. “It’s wonderful for the students to have a culminating event with their work framed and matted. All artists deserve an art show to celebrate their efforts.”

First-year VSA resident artist Amanda Moore facilitated the weekly class.

“We did something different each week,” she said. “We ripped paper to use to make landscapes; we used watercolors and pencils, and made marble printing with shaving cream and food coloring. It was a fun experience, and I hope to continue doing it.”

Based in Dover, VSA Delaware provides educational arts programs and opportunities for people with disabilities.
