Sussex County Genealogical Society using interactive technology

Next meeting Oct. 27
October 22, 2018

The Sussex County Genealogical Society began its new year in September with the election of officers: President Alan Lowe, Vice President Virginia Craciun, Secretary Joan Sundstrom and Treasurer Carol Hedlund. Nancy Purchase is past president. The speaker was Jeanne Zimmerman from Delaware Family History Center who spoke about resources available online at www.familysearch.org and at the family history centers.

The Saturday, Oct. 27 meeting will be held at the Lewes Public Library at 10 a.m., and will include a presentation via Skype by Cari A. Taplin, owner of www.GenealogyPants.com. Her topic is Using Timelines and Tables to Analyze Your Records. This talk will be the first in a series of interactive presentations using technology to bring in well-known speakers who might not be available in person. Subsequent programs will use GoTo Meeting technology. The society hopes to eventually enable access by its out-of-state members. Future topics will include newspaper research, tips for using the Delaware Public Archives in Dover, finding women without their maiden names, and breaking down brick walls.

Other SCGS activities continue:  monthly internet users’ group, Roots Magic software support group, and Genealogist in Residence at the Lewes Historical Society. The five-session fall discussion group will study the “The Family History Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy.” In addition, informal groups meet at the Ocean Pines, Selbyville and Bridgeville libraries.
