The Optimist Club of Sussex County presented its Respect for Law Award to Detective Joey Melvin March 4 at J.D. Shuckers in Georgetown.
Melvin is a member of the Georgetown Police Department and serves as the school resource officer for the Georgetown-area schools in the Indian River School District.
Melvin has a great rapport with students and, at one time, taught civics at Georgetown Middle School. Melvin started a Junior Police Academy at Georgetown Middle School and has had one former student complete the Delaware State Police Academy. He worked for the Milford School District, and served in management analysis under the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Melvin also assisted with the implementation of comprehensive emergency plans in school districts throughout the state of Delaware.
Eventually, Melvin missed working with students, so he took the position of school resource officer.
