May 14, 2018

The Optimist Club of Sussex County hosted Optimist International Youth Appreciation Day April 24 in Georgetown. Two juniors or seniors from each school interested in political science, government, law or the judicial system were invited to participate.

Students started their day with a presentation from attorney Craig Karsnitz, Law Offices of Young, Conway, Stargatt and Taylor, LLP.  They then proceeded to the county administrative building and listened to County Administrator Todd Lawson and Council Member I.G. Burton talk about their roles in the county.

The students attended the county council meeting and then received a tour from Chip Guy, communications director, through the various departments of the administration center.  Several of the department personnel  shared the work they provide for the county.  Lunch was held at the Brick Hotel and a presentation of the history of the hotel was provided.

The afternoon was spent in the Court of Common Pleas where students heard pleas as well as watched a trial. Students from Indian River, Laurel, Milford, Seaford and Sussex Central attended the event.
