Sussex Tech dental students collect donations for Crisis House

October 14, 2018

Three Sussex Tech students recently spearheaded a campaign to collect dental care items and monetary donations for the Crisis House in Georgetown, an emergency shelter for homeless men, women and children. Working on the effort were students Summer Beardsley of Millsboro, Savannah Conaway of Lincoln, and Rebecca Hitchcock of Georgetown, all seniors studying dental services and technology.

The students collected multiple boxes of toothpaste, toothbrushes and dental floss from various local dental offices. The drive was part of both Sussex Tech’s community service initiatives and community outreach through the dental technology program, said instructor Ryan Doherty.

“Our students are very active in the community, helping with drives such as this, and educational efforts to young people at schools and child care centers,” Doherty said.

Crisis House provides housing, workshops, counseling, and referral and job search assistance for people experiencing homelessness. Crisis House, operated by Sussex Community Crisis Housing Services Inc. accepts donations year-round. To contact Crisis House, call 302-856-2246 or email info@scchsinc.org.

Sussex Technical High School’s dental services and technologies program prepares students for employment as dental assistants and in other dental health care opportunities, working in a modern on-site dental facility. Seniors complete Delaware dental radiological technology certification, observe dentistry practices and participate as dental assistant trainees.
