Sussex Tech swimming takes two from Cape

The Sussex Tech swim teams defeated the Cape boys 87-83 and girls 88-82 Jan. 10 at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth.

The Vikings boys’ team moves to 5-1-1, while the girls’ team is 4-3. Both Ravens squads remain undefeated at 4-0.

The Sussex Tech boys’ 200 medley relay team of Cline Broussard, Jonathan Lee, Owen Pogwist and Nathan Venables took first in 1:43.80.  Evan Davis took the 200 freestyle in 1:56.44. Pogwist won the 200 individual medley in 2:06.44 and the 100 butterfly in 55.76. Venables placed first in the 50 freestyle in 23.96 and the 100 free in 52.71. Davis captured the 500 free in 5:17.63. Davis, Michale Wesolowski, Pogwist and Venables won the 400 free relay in 3:29.70. Lee took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.75.

Cape won first place in the 200 free relay with the team of Sam Shoenfeld, Marcus Gromofsky, Ryan Bixler and Dylan Kaplan in 1:36.61. Josh Toback finished the Vikings’ scoring as he won the 100 backstroke in 59.17.

The Ravens girls’ 200 medley relay team of Kelsey Fowler, Kylie Mitchell, Amy Venables and Sarah Perdue took first in 1:58.17. The 200 and 100 freestyle were won by Tech’s Meghan Allen in 2:05.98 and 57.80. Mitchell placed first in the 200 IM in 2:20.34. Mari Dopler took first in the 500 in 6:01.81. Fowler won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.56. Mitchell took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.43. Fowler, Dopler, Allen and Venables won the 400 free relay in 3:59.82.

“The Tech swim team had a goal in mind,” said Ravens senior Kelsey Fowler. “With all the hard work from our swimmers and the motivation from our coaches, in the end we pulled through.”

Cape’s Daisey took first in the 50 freestyle in 26.16. Aya Daisey won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.26, while the 200 free relay team of Julie Heffernan, Gabriella Robertson, Erin Morrissey and Daisey won the 200 free relay in 1:49.69.

“I was disappointed that we didn’t win the meet, but I was proud of the effort and sportsmanship that our team put forth,” said Cape senior Madelyn McGreevy. “But I am excited for the rematch at conferences in February.”

The Vikings will host Lake Forest Thursday, Jan. 17, while the Ravens welcomed Caesar Rodney Monday, Jan. 14.
