Sussex Tech’s Matthew Lewis up for Delaware Teacher of the Year

The Delaware Department of Education will honor 20 of the state’s top teachers at a celebration Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Dover. The ceremony will conclude with the announcement of Delaware’s 2023 Teacher of the Year.

Sussex Technical High School announced Matthew Lewis as its candidate for the Delaware 2023 Teacher of the Year.

For 14 years, Lewis has been the ninth- and 10th-grade social studies educator at Sussex Tech. He joined the Ravens family after earning a bachelor of arts degree and receiving the Outstanding Student Teacher Award at the University of Delaware.

At Tech, Lewis has been a leader in his professional learning community and his department. Through his master of education work in career and technical education at Wilmington University, numerous professional development endeavors, and various leadership roles, he continues to learn and evolve. In addition to his classroom work, he has greatly invested in the school’s men’s and women’s soccer programs, where he has been recognized multiple times as one of the top assistant coaches in the state. Lewis is consistently visible at a myriad of school events, as he is genuinely dedicated to bettering all his students’ lives and fostering a positive school community.

The 2023 Delaware Teacher of the Year will become the state’s nominee in the national program, a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with the Voya Foundation. The recipient will also receive funds for professional and personal use.

Sussex Technical High School is a public school which prepares Sussex County students in grades nine to 12 for their future success in both higher education and workforce environments.
