Due to be married in September, Victoria Sanchez and Sait Aslan have a big year ahead of them, and that doesn’t even count acquiring Sweet Charlie’s in Rehoboth Beach.

The couple took over Sweet Charlie’s, located in First Street Station on Rehoboth Avenue, in November.

Aslan is business-minded and always looking to invest in something, said Sanchez. This was one business she could finally get behind, she said.

“It’s unique, and who doesn’t love ice cream?” said Sanchez. “Rehoboth is really growing, and we’re looking forward to being a part of that.”

Sweet Charlie’s is a shop offering Thai-inspired ice cream rolls. The rolls are made by pouring a thin layer of liquid ice cream onto a well-below-freezing, stainless steel circle and then rolling up the ice cream after it freezes. Brothers Kyle and Jacob Billig created the Philadelphia-based company in 2015. When the Rehoboth location opened in 2016, it was one of the first franchisees.

It wasn’t lost on Sanchez and Aslan that they were taking on business ownership and getting married in the same year, but they were unfazed.

“It’s the next part of our journey. We can’t wait,” said Sanchez.

Sweet Charlie’s is reopening Saturday, Feb. 4, and it will be open weekends until the spring. This summer the hours will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, said Aslan, adding the menu also includes milkshakes, vegan options, a number of different mix-ins, toppings and something called the Tall Charlie – one mega roll placed inside a glazed doughnut. It’s basically an ice cream hot dog, said a smiling Aslan.
