Sylvester “Pop” Quillen Sr., retired custodian

Sylvester G. “Pop” Quillen Sr., 86, of Ocean View went home to be with the Lord Friday, Dec. 6, 2019, while surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his home.  

He was born in Frankford June 6, 1933, son of the late Eldon Henry Quillen and the late Marie Elizabeth (Furman) Quillen.  “Pop” proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 during the Korean War.  

He retired as a custodian with over 26 years of service in 1991 from the Indian River School District.  “Pop” was also the owner and operator of Quillen’s Repair Shop for 37 years. He had a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a helping hand. “Pop” loved to cut grass, put puzzles together, and listen to country music and the Grand Ole Opry.  His love and devotion to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be cherished by his family.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte L. Quillen; a son, Sylvester G. “Chuck” Quillen Jr.; and a brother, Charles Quillen.  He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Gail Quillen; two sisters, Daisy Williams and Jeanette Fry; a brother, Brice Quillen; a grandson, Sylvester G. “Bud” Quillen III; a granddaughter, Jenna Quillen; and three great-grandchildren, Kylee and Steven Reynolds and Zachary Quillen.

A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, Friday, Dec. 13, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, where a funeral service will begin at noon.  Interment will follow at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations in Sylvester’s name to Millville Volunteer Fire Company, 35554 Atlantic Ave., Millville, DE 19967.
