T. Carney Sussex Law accepting clients

The son of a construction contractor, attorney Tom Carney said he’s always known he was going to make a profession out of real estate. He said he also knew it wasn’t going to be on the manual labor end of the profession.

“I grew up on construction sites, and I knew I wanted a desk,” said Carney, laughing, standing in a yet-to-be completed conference room in his new office.

Specializing in real estate and transactional law, Carney opened T. Carney Sussex Law earlier this year with a temporary office in Dewey Beach. His permanent office will be located in Sandpiper Shopping Center, halfway between Lewes and Rehoboth on the northbound side of Route 1. The plan was to be set up by April 1, said Carney.

A native Delawarean and a 2010 graduate of Temple School of Law, Carney has worked as assistant city solicitor for Wilmington, as associate attorney at Morris James LLP and, most recently, as attorney at Baird, Mandalas and Brockstedt.

“Opening my own practice is just part of a natural evolution,” he said.

Carney grew up in Wilmington, but his parents have had a house in Sussex County since he was a kid. With roots in both ends of the state, he said he chose to open his law firm in the Cape Region because of all the growth and expansion. He said as his business expands, so will his service to other parts of the state.

The second-floor office overlooks the southern woods of Munchy Branch. Carney said he’s looking forward to its completion. It’s equidistant between Lewes and Rehoboth, at a major intersection, and there’s plenty of parking, he said.

“I’ve really put quite a bit of thought into how this will look,” said Carney, who is an active member of the Delaware State Bar Association and serves as section secretary for the bar’s Real and Personal Property section.
