Take proposed rezoning back to Lewes planners

May 21, 2019

The following letter was sent to Lewes Mayor and City Council with a copy submitted to the Cape Gazette for publication.

As a resident of the City of Lewes and living in Canary Creek, I understand the need to grow the city in areas that are contiguous to the current city map.

The concern I have is that we are moving too fast in approving large developments in a city that is known for its trees and open space.

Before you approve any final site plans on rezoning, I implore you as the mayor and the city council to refer the proposed 90 units on the Brittingham Property back to the Lewes Planning Commission. There are too many variables, including hydrologic studies, DelDOT road issues and the marsh impact to make this decision without all studies and information. Additionally, the buffer being proposed, in my view, is totally inadequate and out of character with New Road development and the character of Lewes.

You have been voted in by the residents of Lewes, and being a responsible public servant begs you to consider the concerns expressed by many.

I feel  you have ignored too many residents’ concerns and need to reconsider.

I understand that development will take place both inside and outside the city, but on annexed lands we need to protect the character of Lewes.

High-density development and spot rezoning on a potential marsh is in my opinion not in character with Lewes.  This potential development of 90 suggested homes needs to be re-examined.

I implore you to refer back to the planning commission as the annexation committee, in my view, has made many errors.  Taking bad counsel is something I do not think you and the council want to undertake.

I thank you for your time and consideration.
