Tanger Outlets donates $6,000 to local schools

August 25, 2019

Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth Beach announced five local schools are the recipients of TangerKids Grants for the 2019-20 school year.

This year’s grant of almost $6,000 will be shared among the following recipients in Sussex County.

Howard T. Ennis School in Georgetown received $306 for its Healthy Minds and Bodies initiative, which teaches daily living skills to students with moderate to severe disabilities and students with autism. The funds will be used to purchase educational materials that provide hands-on examples for students to learn valuable life skills and healthy habits for daily living.

North Georgetown Elementary received $494 to buy 25 scientific calculators for its Future Leaders Calculate their Way to Success program. The calculators are needed for high-level math equations, and to increase student understanding of arithmetic operations, algorithms and numerical relationships. The calculators will help students navigate the financial literacy pathways program which expands students’ financial vocabulary in the fields of science, business management and engineering.

North Georgetown Elementary also received $500 for its Reading is Fun! program that helps students develop a love of reading by providing access to books, graphic novels and news articles at their independent reading level. Research shows that the more students read at their independent reading levels, the more growth they will show in their reading ability at grade level.

East Millsboro Elementary received $1,000 for its Students in Transition program, which provides homeless students with suitcases holding basic necessities like pajamas and toiletries so they can have an element of stability and pride, and focus on their education as they navigate the stresses of homelessness.

H.O. Brittingham Elementary in Milton received $1,200 for its VEX IQ Robotics Program, which teaches students the engineering process. Students in the school’s Robotics Club work in teams to design and build the best robot they can to accomplish a certain task, which exposes pupils to STEM concepts and opens up the possibility of pursuing further studies and careers in technology fields.

Sussex Central High School in Georgetown received $2,400 for its Read to Learn program to build on last year’s successes. Focusing on improving students’ reading comprehension, this year’s grant will provide subscriptions for Scholastic’s Science World magazine to all ninth-grade science classes at Sussex Central. The magazines support in-class lessons, and provide supplemental reading that is rich and varied in format on topics that are relevant to students. Students can take the magazines home with them, and teachers can hold the students accountable for reading and understanding the material.

In keeping with Tanger Outlets’ philanthropic mission to support the future of children in the communities where Tanger Outlets centers are located, the TangerKids Grants program is designed to award grant money to local schools for special projects, needed programs or equipment that can make a difference in the lives of children.
