Taste of Culture raises funds for India

May 22, 2019

The Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club International Fund hosted a fundraiser May 9 at Ivy in Dewey Beach. The event, A Taste of Culture, will help improve school conditions in the impoverished rural Sirsi area of India, in cooperation with local Rotarians there.

Event coordinator Dr. Ram Hosmane, a local physician and Rotarian, describes rural Sirsi schools as needing toilets, hand-washing stations, clean drinking water, books, desks and playgrounds. “These improvements will result in better attendance, improved studies, and greater continuity of education,” said Hosmane. Current school conditions in Sirsi result in low attendance and high dropout rates.

In past years, the Lewes-Rehoboth International Fund has sponsored two trips by teams of physicians and medical staff to Sirsi, and funding for technology in Sirsi schools. At the event, international food from local restaurants and wine from around the world were available. Also featured were silent auction and basket raffles, all to benefit international education.
