Lewes is a remarkable community, cherished by both residents and visitors. People are drawn here not by chance, but because of the town’s vibrant businesses, natural beauty, deep respect for its history and commitment to preserving the environment.
None of this happens on its own. Lewes thrives because so many individuals with experience, talent and dedication choose to give back. Organizations such as Lewes in Bloom, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, Coastal Concerts and many others contribute immeasurably to the character of our town. Equally essential are our local government bodies – the mayor and city council, the Board of Public Works, and the many committees that support them, including the planning commission, finance committee and mitigation teams.
These governmental and nongovernmental groups are powered by people who volunteer extraordinary amounts of time, energy and expertise. Their service is the backbone of the community we enjoy.
We should make every effort to thank them and treat them with respect. When we fail to do so, we risk discouraging the very people whose willingness to serve keeps Lewes strong. Ultimately, our entire community is diminished when dedicated citizens are driven away from public service.
