Thank you Charlotte King and Vivienne Holt for the work you do, and for your chilling review of our nation’s history of separating children from their parents. Thanks too for asking us to consider our moral obligation to do something.
A place to start is imagining our children being trapped in such circumstances, and recognizing that in the changing political world we live in, such an experience can hit home, as it has for the Sussex families who have taken in some separated children. For the rest of us, it’s no longer inconceivable that we, or someone we know, could sometime soon have a personal connection to a separated child. Just four years ago, unimaginable; today, all too real a possibility.
Your history lesson demonstrates the horrendous choices our elected officials can make. Minimally our moral obligation is to vote against any elected official who defends such treatment of children.
