Coach Kate Austin enters her 15th season as head coach of Cape field hockey having won 11 state championships. Her tenure has included two overtime losses to Smyrna in the finals and a quarterfinal loss at Tower Hill that broke a 100-game winning streak against in-state opponents. She is the Cape leader for most state championships won.
This Friday, Aug. 21, will bring a play day totalling five teams, each playing four 32-minute games with a running clock.
The team was made like an amoeba and split into two squads after a Wednesday practice and intersquad scrimmage.
The 2026 team is experienced, with nine seniors and five juniors. ”Lots of experience and a lot of athletes below them," Austin said. “We still don’t know where everyone is going to be playing."
Cape's Friday play day invitees include Queen Anne's, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Stephen Decatur and Madison.
Cape will open the season Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Sussex Tech.
The new D1 and D2 assignments will go into effect for the 2027-28 school year.
