Thoughts on COVID-19 and the 2020 election

November 27, 2020

I am trying to comprehend why it is that 30 percent of the American public believe President Trump’s contention that there has been massive fraud in the recent presidential election.

Is it because Trump is a reliable truth teller?  As the famous sports broadcaster, Warner Wolf, would say, “Let’s go to the video [and audio] tape!”

In March, Trump insisted that there were very few cases of COVID-19  in the U.S. and would soon go down to zero. Later, he promised that when the warm weather came, COVID-19 would “miraculously” go away. Then during the late summer, Trump promised, contradicting Dr. Fauci, that COVID-19 would not return in the fall. All during his campaign rallies, Trump insisted that the nation was “rounding the turn” on the pandemic and that as soon as the election was over, there would be no more talk about the COVID-19 virus.

Here’s what else the video/audio tape also shows: When Bob Woodward of Watergate fame released his book, the bestselling “Rage,” he also released his audio tapes revealing Trump telling him he was fully knowledgeable of the potential dangers of the COVID-19 virus and that he was actively “downplaying” the virus. Downplaying must be a euphemism for lying about the dangers of the virus. As of this writing, more than a quarter of a million persons have died of COVID-19-related illnesses, and there are over 10 million cases in the U.S. Additionally, next to Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his defeat to President-elect Biden, the main news story is the scourge of COVID-19. In fact, Trump “Uber-loyalist” Sen. Ted Cruz (R.-Tex) “guaranteed” that there would be no mention of COVID-19 after Nov. 3! Finally, as opposed to COVID-19 not coming back, each day now shows record high deaths and new cases.

Now, let’s consider Trump’s contention that he really won the 2020 election: Despite more than 15 court defeats, states certifying votes showing that Biden will ultimately receive 306 electoral votes and win the popular vote by more than 5 million votes, Trump is still tweeting that he’s the winner!! The “videotape” will also show that in 2016, Trump established a commission to ferret out the  claimed numerous fraudulent votes that would demonstrate that he’d actually won the popular vote in 2016. In relatively short order, this commission was disbanded because it was unable to find any fraud.

How credulous is this group of Trump loyalists who agree with Trump’s disingenuous victory contention? Are they like those sad victims of COVID-19 hospitalized in South Dakota, complaining to the nurses, “How can this be happening? COVID-19 is a hoax?” Do they also still believe in the Tooth Fairy, Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster?
