Tidewater physical therapist certified in vestibular rehab

July 16, 2018

Jennafer “Jenna” Tryon, DPT, of Tidewater Physical Therapy Rehabilitation and Associates PA, recently received her certification in vestibular rehabilitation through the American Physical Therapy Association.

The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that process the sensory information involved with controlling balance and eye movements. If disease or injury damages this processing area, vestibular disorders can result. Vestibular disorders can also result from or be worsened by genetic or environmental conditions or age, or occur for unknown reasons, as stated by the Vestibular Disorders Association. Vestibular therapy also treats conditions related to chronic dizziness or imbalance that impact one’s ability to perform activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and getting around inside the home.

To certify, therapists must complete an intense, evidence-based, six-day course of formal instruction, laboratory sessions and self-study. They also have to be able to demonstrate assessment skills and appropriate treatment procedures, as well as create treatment plans for all types of vestibular disorders.

Jennifer Walter, Tidewater Physical Therapy chief operating officer and chief financial officer, said, “As a company who specializes in vestibular rehabilitation, we are thrilled to add another therapist to our team of specialists. We are remarkably proud of Dr. Tryon for obtaining her competency in vestibular rehabilitation. Dr. Tryon has consistently shown her dedication to her patients and our practice by continuing to add to her repertoire of specialties. At Tidewater Physical Therapy, we encourage and support our physical therapists in the continuation of their education.”

It is estimated that as many as 35 percent of adults age 40 or older in the U.S. have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction.

Tidewater Physical Therapy, located at 17015 Old Orchard Road, Lewes, has an established, comprehensive vestibular rehabilitation program.
