Mr. Nick Caggiano’s recent comments on drawing more visitors and foot traffic to Rehoboth indicate that he did not attend the meetings of the commissioners on the very subject of a parking garage in downtown.
I attended several of those meetings over several months which were open to the public. Everyone agrees that we need to find ways to increase parking.
Many pros and cons were discussed including cost, who would use the garage, the size and location of the building, and number of parking spaces. Unless there could be found a “perfect” place for the garage close to the beach and shops and restaurants, there was no clear answer to who would use it. Beachgoers want to park as close as possible to the beach. The cost of a private and city cooperating venture had many flaws.
The placement near the firehouse had many flaws because of proximity to the building and its communications wires, etc.
The amount of use in the off-season would not help sustain the garage.
There are now in progress reconfigurations of existing areas to increase more parking. It’s a start.
An expensive, too-distant for-intended-users garage is not the answer.
