Trash truck catches fire south of Dewey Beach

September 15, 2020

A trash truck caught fire Sept. 15 on Route 1 south of Dewey Beach, dumping a load of garbage on the roadway.

Firefighters with the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Co. responded at 8:30 a.m. to Route 1 near Conquest Road to find a trash truck on fire, said Capt. Kent Swarts of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Co.

When firefighters arrived, Swarts said, the truck had dropped a load of garbage on the roadway and had moved the truck away from the burning pile. Southbound Route 1 was closed for about 40 minutes while fire department units put out the fire and a road crew moved the debris off the highway. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is unknown, Swarts said.
