Travis Bush wins inaugural Delmarva Tunnel to Towers 5K

Kimberly Geyer takes top female finish
August 13, 2018

Travis Bush of Berlin, Md., took the top spot in the 2018 Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk in Lewes.

Kimberly Geyer of Millersville, Pa., a runner of several local races, took top female honors. Each participant wore a picture of a first responder who lost his or her life during the 9/11 tragedy.

The race honors the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others Sept. 11, 2001, during the attack on the Twin Towers.

Siller was off from work and had made plans to play golf with his brothers on 9/11 when he heard of the attack on the Twin Towers. He quickly made it to his fire department and retrieved his equipment and raced to toward the site. He made it to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel that links Brooklyn to Manhattan and could not get through because it was shut down for security. He quickly put on his 60-plus pounds of equipment, ran the three miles through the tunnel and made it to the towers where he made the ultimate sacrifice to save others trapped inside. Siller was one of 12 members of Brooklyn Squad 1 who perished in the attacks.

His family set up the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which builds homes for injured service members and supports the families of first responders who have lost their lives serving New York citizens.
