Trent Sewell beats a fast field to win Father’s Day 5K in 17:27

Popular race attracts 375 runners

A total of 375 runners snaked through the starting chute June 17 for the 28th edition of the Father’s Day 5K. The event is staged at Wilmington Avenue and the Rehoboth Boardwalk.

The race was won by Trent Sewell in 17:27. Sewell was chased to the finish line by Martin Rodriguez in 17:32. The race was fast, with 13 runners breaking 20 minutes.

Also breaking the 20-minute barrier were DJ Farren, 18:18; Thom Valentine, 18:32; Jon Zubrowski, 18:38; Cory Parts, 18:39; Matt Klapak, 18:41; Scott Biola, 18:56; Ulises Castaneda, 19:00; Jordan Ford, 19:25; Matt Weaver, 19:33; Paul Montini, 19:49; and Chris Stanley, 19:50.

The top 5 women were Dara Ford, 21:13; Natalie Ferguson, 21:23; Olivia Montini, 21:32; Mardiny Ung, 23:00; and Carly Calhoon 23:21.

Jack Huxtable, an 80-year-old retired diplomat, ran 27:52, breaking his recently established state record of 28:11. Huxtable also holds the state record in the 75-79 age group of 24:16.

Seashore Striders events this weekend include the Jungle Jim’s 5K Saturday, June 23, and the Bill Degnan 5K Sunday, June 24. Both races start at 7:30 a.m. The 23rd Degnan race starts in front of Cape Henlopen High School by the rotunda.
