Good leaders create opportunities for others to point out the mistakes or oversights of the leader. Perhaps the good leadership of the Lewes Mayor and the City Council is to be commended for their creation of an opportunity for Dr. Kerry Tripp to write a letter to the Cape Gazette? Dr. Tripp addressed the city's practice of doling out tax dollars on the basis of whimsical and personal decisions. Dr. Tripp's advice, freely given, no consulting contract or legal fees involved, encourages a more open discussion relative to the expenditure of citizen tax dollars. City leaders will not be billed for having received an ad hoc lecture for a class on civic law.
The responsible stewardship of our tax dollars is important. If the city wants to hand over tax dollars to the haves, no need to be secretive, as long as such practices follow publicly established rules for the expenditure of city monies. The same for giving city monies to religious organizations of whatever type. The City of Lewes is fortunate to have citizens such as Dr. Tripp who are in the know and willing to share their valuable education and training. For the present, it seems that Lewes presents many opportunities for good leadership to be demonstrated.
