Tulips bloom just in time for Lewes celebration

10th annual event honors Dutch heritage and historic preservation in the First Town

The 10th annual Lewes Tulip Celebration continues Saturday, April 13. Following a busy weekend of activities and events April 5-7, on April 13 the Lewes in Bloom sale continues from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of Citizens Bank, 131 Second St., and Tiptoe to the Tulips trolley tours will take place at 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Call the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center at 645-8073 for more information or to reserve seats for $10.

Events last weekend included presentation of awards in the photography contest, Peninsula Gallery’s Floral Art Exhibition, Zwaanendael Museum exhibits and games, Sussex Gardeners’ floral arrangements in the museum, spring flowers quilt exhibit at Mare’s Quilt Shop, children’s stories and games at Kid’s Ketch, plein-air painting by Cape Artists, Oyster Fest benefit, Lewes in Bloom sales, a Lewes Beekeeping exhibit and a Lewes Historical Society presentation on the 206th anniversary of the bombardment of Lewes in 1813 during the War of 1812.

Two Lips-Culinary Week took place in conjunction with the celebration with specials at participating restaurants and a chance to win prizes, including the grand prize of a two-night stay at Dogfish Inn. Sponsors include Lewes Chamber of Commerce, Lewes Historical Society, City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission, Coastal Camera Club, Historic Lewes Farmers Market, Fulton Bank and Zwaanendael Museum.
