Claire Lopez scores a behind the back goal PHOTO ERIC GOOCH Cape senior Claire Lopez entered the May 23 quarterfinal lacrosse playoff versus Wilmington Friends slightly hobbled with a wrapped thigh. Conditions on the field turf were dreary and drizzly.
Lopez responded with a six-point first half, scoring three goals and dishing off three assists as Cape surged to a 14-2 halftime lead and cruised home cautiously to win 18-6.
Two of Lopez's goals were behind the back. They weren't to show off; she is the magic stick shooter and server. Lopez leads the team in career assists, a master of fitting balls into tight windows.
“We’re a little banged up right now so some players were limited and others played different positions," said coach Lindsey Underwood. "We hadn't played a game in 10 days, but I’m happy how everyone played."
Cape will host Caesar Rodney in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 27. The Riders defeated St. Andrew's 16-7 in the quarterfinals.
The side of the other bracket has Tower Hill, a 24-5 winner over Sussex Academy, hosting Archmere, who defeated Tatnall 10-7. That game is at 4:30 p.m.
Joining Lopez with three-goal hat tricks were Haley Gamuciello, Ally Diehl and Mackenzie Todd. Mairead Rishko and Regan Best each had two goals, while Amara Fruchtman and Mikaela Gordan each scored one.
Adding assists were Todd with two, and Gamuciello, Diehl, Rishko and Best each with one apiece.
Jordan Murray and Emily Wells split halves in goal for Cape.
Wilmington Friends' goals were recorded by Molly Dolan and Cora Lohkamp with two each. Palmer Jenney, an eighth-grader, and Lila Rubano each had one goal. Dolan and Lohkamp each had an assist. Goalie Keeley Galbraith had five saves for the Quakers.
The championship game of girls' lacrosse is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, at Caesar Rodney High School. The 3 p.m. game will follow the boys' title game at 12 p.m.
Notes: Cape defeated Caesar Rodney the first game of the regular season 15-2. The Riders were missing some key players. The Riders, coached by former Cape goalie Gina Voss, went on to an 11-4 season and second straight appearance in the semifinals. Deb Windett is a volunteer assistant on the Riders' staff. Cape coaches Lindsey Underwood, Bruce Leibu and Leigh Rupar hit the milestone of 150 career wins while coaching together.
