Two Cape teachers to offer Advance SAT Prep starting Jan. 16

Janeen McGinley and Mary Garvert to team up

Preparing for the SAT can be a stressful and daunting task for many students. It can be intimidating and scary, which might ultimately lead to students choosing to not take the exam, which is required not only by the state, but for many college applications as well. Two teachers at Cape Henlopen High School are making it their mission to address these concerns for local sophomores and juniors.

"By offering the Advance SAT Prep course, we want to make sure students feel comfortable taking the test," said Janeen McGinley, a math teacher at Cape Henlopen High School. "We don't want students to feel intimidated by the types of questions that are on the exam, and ultimately we want them to feel so prepared that their confidence outweighs their concern during test time."

McGinley and English Language Arts teacher Mary Garvert teamed up to create a focused, systemic, content-rich plan to help students not only feel comfortable taking the SAT, but increase their test scores as well. "Our goal is to provide targeted instruction and strategies to help advance test scores," said Garvert. "Ms. McGinley will cover the math content, and I will provide instruction on the evidence-based reading and writing sections."

Together the two will help students prepare for the Saturday, March 10 administration of the SAT exam.

McGinley said, "The other great thing about this course is that we're offering it to any sophomore or junior in the area who wants the extra help. Whether it's a student at Cape, a student at a private school or even a student who might be homeschooled, this program is available to everyone."

Students will have two options for the course. There is a six-week prep course which will be more in-depth and take place from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 16 to Feb. 22. The other option is a two-week intensive boot camp that will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday, Feb. 26 to March 9. The content for each night will alternate. While math may be covered on Tuesdays, ELA would be covered on Thursdays (or vice versa).

The program is competitively priced, and cost varies depending on whether the student is interested in the full six weeks, or the abbreviated two-week option. The final sign-up deadline is Monday, Jan. 1. For more information, visit the Advance SAT Prep LLC Facebook page or email AdvanceSATPrep@gmail.com.
