UNICO Brian Piccolo Award Ceremony set for Nov. 11

Rehoboth Area Chapter inducts new officers and member

At it first seasonal meeting and wine & cheese social held Sept. 20, the Rehoboth Area Chapter of UNICO inducted new President Ed Mason and Vice President Francesco “Ray” Cilea, along with a new member, Joe Cumella. Members also reviewed and discussed the proposed calendar of meetings and events for 2018-19.

The chapter’s main fall event, the Brian Piccolo Award Ceremony and Dinner, is set for 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 11, at St. Edmond Parish Hall, Rehoboth Beach, featuring a homemade Italian buffet. This fundraiser will honor high school senior athletes of Italian heritage who have been nominated by their schools and who exhibit the outstanding personality and character traits of Brian Piccolo, a legendary Italian-American football player for the Chicago Bears in the late 1960s.

The guest speaker will be signora Cristina Christy, teacher of Italian at Cape Henlopen High School. Attorney Richard DiLiberto, chair of the Delaware Commission on Italian Heritage and Culture, will host the event as master of ceremonies.

All nominees will receive gifts and be honored at the ceremony along with family and friends. The winner, to be announced at the ceremony, will also receive a plaque to commemorate his/her success, and the athletic department of the recipient’s school will receive a donation of $1,000 to benefit all team members. The event is open to the public; all are invited. Tickets are $20 and can by purchased by contacting unicodelawaredistrict1@gmail.com.
