Students from Mariner, Beacon and Frederick D. Thomas middle schools recently came together for a Unified Soccer Tournament hosted at Mariner Middle School, celebrating teamwork, inclusion and sportsmanship through friendly competition.

The event featured unified teams made up of both student-athletes and peer partners from each school, giving students the opportunity to compete against one another while building friendships and supporting each other on and off the field.

Throughout the tournament, teams played games consisting of 30-minute halves, showcasing teamwork, communication and enthusiasm during each matchup. Students demonstrated the true spirit of unified sports by encouraging teammates, celebrating successes together and creating an inclusive environment for all participants.

Members of the Cape Henlopen High School girls' soccer team played an important role in the success of the event by assisting with coaching and refereeing throughout the tournament. Their leadership and support helped provide younger students with a positive and encouraging experience while strengthening connections across schools within the district.

“This tournament was about much more than soccer,” said Tom Pickard, Mariner Middle School PE teacher and event coordinator. “It was an opportunity for students from across the district to come together, support one another, and experience the power of inclusion and teamwork. We are incredibly proud of all the students who participated and grateful to the Cape girls’ soccer players who helped make the event such a success.”

"This tournament beautifully reflected what inclusive education is all about, creating opportunities for every student to feel valued, connected, and successful,” said Dr. Eileen Baker, district supervisor of inclusive education. “Watching students encourage one another, celebrate each other’s accomplishments and build friendships through athletics was incredibly meaningful. Unified events like this help foster empathy, leadership and a stronger sense of community across our schools.”
